This series consists of outgoing letters and telegrams to the Office of the Commissioner-General of Immigration and its predecessors; immigration officials at various ports of entry including Philadelphia and Ellis Island; administrative heads of charitable institutions; and private individuals. The letters relate generally to the inspection and admission of aliens in the United States. It includes reports of expenses incurred in connection with the administration of immigration regulations including copies of payrolls; reports of collections of immigrant money; and copies of telegrams to individuals concerning alien relatives being detained by immigration authorities.

As the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 to 1954, it processed approximately 12 million immigrants to the United States in New York Harbor, within the states of New York and New Jersey.
